High Quality Kibble
Feeding High-Quality Kibble: What You Need to Know
Your puppy is now eating kibble and doing great on it. Golden Retrievers are the breed with the highest cancer rate and are naturally more prone to food sensitivities. That’s why one of our top priorities, alongside building a strong immune system, is helping all of our puppies develop resilience against food allergies. We do this by rotating multiple proteins and introducing them gradually over the course of 4 weeks, laying the foundation for long-term health.
While we strongly believe in the benefits of raw and fresh feeding, we understand that it may not be the right fit for every family’s lifestyle. In those cases, we recommend choosing a high-quality kibble to ensure your puppy still receives optimal nutrition.
Because puppies can have sensitive little tummies, it’s important to keep their food consistent and make any changes slowly, especially during the first couple of weeks at home while they’re adjusting to a new environment, new schedule, and new family.
If you choose to feed kibble, here are a few important things to keep in mind to protect your puppy’s digestive health and support proper development:
✅ Choosing a Quality Kibble
• Look for meat-based formulas (not corn- or soy-based).
• Choose a brand with minimal fillers and no artificial preservatives (avoid BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
• Pick a formula that supports skin, coat, and digestion, especially for active breeds like Mini Aussies.
First-Year Nutritional Add-Ins (Especially for Mini Aussie Puppies)
• Fish oil, supports brain development, skin and coat health, and helps reduce inflammation
• Probiotic, supports digestion, stool quality, and immune health, especially during food transitions
• Pumpkin (in moderation), helps firm stool and supports digestion
• Vitamin E, supports immune health and balances omega-3 supplementation
Victor Hi-Pro Plus provides quality protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, and many owners choose to add salmon oil, probiotics, or pumpkin for extra support during the first year.
We personally recommend and have used Victor Hi-Pro Plus for our puppies and adults because we have spent an extensive amount of time researching dog food brands, breaking down every ingredient, quality, sourcing, and the actual nutrient calculations behind each formula, not just the marketing on the bag. Victor consistently meets the nutritional requirements I look for, with properly balanced protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals to support growth, immune health, and long-term structure. It’s nutrient-dense without unnecessary fillers, easy to digest, and delivers consistent results across all life stages. After comparing countless formulas and doing the math on what puppies and adult dogs truly need, Victor is the food I trust. This brand can also be found on Amazon, there is a discount if you sign up for the subscription plan, and overall it’s a much more affordable high quality kibble. 😊’
🔄 How to Transition Slowly
Even switching between kibble brands can upset your puppy’s stomach if done too quickly. Adding a probiotic can help support healthy gut bacteria and reduce digestive upset during the transition.
Recommended Transition Schedule:
• Day 1–3: 75% current food, 25% new food
• Day 4–6: 50% current food, 50% new food
• Day 7–9: 25% current food, 75% new food
• Day 10: 100% new food
⚠️ If your puppy develops loose stool, slow the transition down or pause at a lower ratio for a few extra days.
💡 Important Notes:
• Always hydrate dry food with warm water or bone broth before feeding, this can help digestion and make it easier for young puppies to eat.
• Even on kibble, your pup can benefit from simple toppers like scrambled eggs, plain Greek yogurt, or pumpkin (in moderation).
• Probiotics can be added during transition to support gut health (example, Proviable-DC or plain Greek yogurt).
🚫 Brands We Don’t Recommend 🚫
While some brands have strong marketing, we do not recommend Blue Buffalo or most Purina formulas for the following reasons:
• Blue Buffalo: Known for frequent recalls, misleading ingredient claims, and digestive issues in many dogs.
• Purina (Dog Chow, Puppy Chow, Beneful, etc.): Many lines use cheap fillers like corn, soy, and meat by-product meals as main ingredients, which can be harder to digest and offer less nutritional value.
Bottom line: choosing a food with real, quality ingredients can support your Mini Aussie’s digestion, coat, energy levels, and long-term health.
